Regular Brushing and It’s Importance
Brushing might seem like a simple task, but it’s one of the most powerful things you can do to support your dog’s health, comfort, and grooming success. Whether your pup has a long, curly, double, or short coat, regular brushing plays a huge role in keeping them happy between grooming appointments.
As a groomer, I only see most dogs every 4–8 weeks. What happens at home in between those visits makes all the difference.
Why Regular Brushing Matters
1. It Prevents Matting and Discomfort
Mats don’t just “look messy” — they pull on the skin, trap moisture, hide debris, and can become painful very quickly. Regular brushing keeps the coat loose, airy, and comfortable.
2. It Reduces Shedding
For double‑coated breeds, brushing helps remove loose undercoat before it ends up on your floors, furniture, and clothes. It also keeps the coat healthier and cleaner.
3. It Spreads Natural Oils
Your dog’s skin produces oils that keep the coat shiny and healthy. Brushing distributes those oils from root to tip, supporting a soft, nourished coat.
4. It Stimulates the Skin
Brushing increases blood flow and supports healthy skin and hair growth. It’s like a mini massage your dog can enjoy daily.
5. It Helps You Catch Issues Early
Lumps, bumps, fleas, ticks, hot spots — you’ll notice them sooner when you’re brushing regularly. Early detection means quicker care.
6. It Builds Trust and Strengthens Your Bond
Brushing is hands‑on, calming time that helps your dog feel safe and connected. Many dogs learn to love this routine when it’s done gently and consistently.
How Often Should You Brush?
Most dogs benefit from daily brushing, especially long‑haired, curly‑coated, or double‑coated breeds. Even short‑haired dogs appreciate a quick brush a few times a week to remove loose hair and stimulate the skin.
Consistency is key — a few minutes a day is far easier (and kinder!) than trying to tackle a week’s worth of tangles all at once.
Why Brushing Helps Your Grooming Appointments
Regular brushing at home helps ensure:
Shorter, smoother grooming sessions
Less stress for your dog
A healthier coat and skin
The ability to achieve the haircut you want
A safer, more comfortable grooming experience
When your dog arrives brushed and maintained, grooming becomes a positive, predictable routine instead of a stressful one.
